Every December, The Pantone Colour Institute announces the upcoming year’s most influential color. And, after much anticipation, it has finally been announced.
The Pantone Colour of the Year for 2018 is Ultra Violet – a brilliant, vivid and intense shade of purple.
When it comes to design experts holding high authority, there is no establishment more qualified to speak about the subject of color than The Pantone Colour Institute. It has been hailed as “the world’s most comprehensive destination to gain intelligence, insight, and implications on the science and emotions of color.”
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute describes Ultra Violet as a “Provocative and thoughtful purple shade that embodies individuality and spirituality.” Eiseman goes on to say, “From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
Creative industries around the globe are responding enthusiastically to Ultra Violet and the impact it will have on their work. Here at Design Wizard, we are especially thrilled about the news, but more about that later. As a graphic design software company, a huge part of our time is spent analyzing trends. Why is purple special?
Purple has many positive connotations. Colour Psychology explains how the rich shade “combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. It symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. It conveys wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic.”
This radiant color has an undeniable charm. It is interesting, eye-catching and vibrant. Due to Purple’s gender neutrality, it is also attractive to everyone.
Brenda Milis, the Principal of Creative Services and Visual Trends for Adobe Stock said in her latest blog, “Ultra Violet offers a powerful tool to those of us who communicate visually – it provides us with an impactful tone that symbolizes and speaks to the mood of the current social and cultural climate, and that addresses a need to think originally, creatively, and with ingenuity.”
But the reason the teams here at Design Wizard are particularly inspirited about this development is that Ultra Violet is very similar to our primary brand color. So we are heading into next year feeling totally in tune with what design means to people.

3 Ways To Introduce Ultra Violet To Your Life In 2018
Ultra Violet is the antithesis of last years Pantone Color Of The Year, which was Greenery. Also known as “natures neutral” this soothing shade was inspired by all things natural and organic. And it was appropriate for 2017, many report that it was a year of hard work, growth, and change. But 2018 is about stepping up your game, harnessing confidence and standing out.
Incorporating Ultra Violet into your visual content is sure to impress your online friends and followers. Go bold with various shade of purple and striking images, like the examples that are in this blog. These designs will be hard to miss on a news-feed!
But you can also incorporate subtle touches of Ultra Violet in things like text, borders, frames and call-to-action buttons.
Don’t forget to include the associated hashtags too. Using #ultraviolet and #pantone #coloroftheyear will demonstrate that you are up-to-date on trends and what’s happening.

Purple foods are being hailed as one of this year’s Superfoods, this is not based purely on aesthetics, but science. Lots of brightly colored food like fruit and vegetables contain antioxidants, which can help to protect us from free radicals and can stave off certain diseases. But some purple foods like blackberries, blueberries, blackcurrant, and aubergines have antioxidants called anthocyanins which deliver an even bigger health boost. There has been a rise in purple food but it is set to explode next year.
The healthy food experts at US grocery store franchise Whole Foods said in a statement:
“Richly colored purple foods are popping up everywhere: purple cauliflower, black rice, purple asparagus, elderberries, acai, purple sweet potatoes, purple corn, and cereal. The power of purple goes beyond the vibrant color and often indicates nutrient density and antioxidants.”
